What is TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull. This joint allows you to move your jaw up and down and side to side, allowing you to speak and eat.
When this joint is not functioning correctly, symptoms such as jaw pain, headaches, or ringing in the ears may arise.
TMJ disorder is most often caused by misalignment of the teeth and/or jaw, but other factors such as the shape of the skull, breathing problems, or injuries and trauma to the jaw can also contribute.
TMJ Disorder Treatment
At France Gascon Dental Clinic, our dentists can diagnose and develop a treatment plan for TMJ disorder.
Treatment may include wearing a mouth guard at night. Depending on your case, other treatments may be recommended such as relaxation techniques, physiotherapy or the use of a TENS machine (an electrical stimulation device) to encourage the facial and jaw muscles to relax.
If tooth or jaw alignment is contributing to TMJ disorder, orthodontic treatment may be necessary.
Our dentists will work with you to create a treatment plan that works for your unique needs.
